When it comes to home security, many immediately think of installing locks and alarms for safety.  These measures are undoubtedly effective but there are even more ways to protect a home and its residents.  Today, we’re taking a look at the importance of home security lighting and motion sensors to add another layer of defense.

Home Security Lighting

Home security lighting is an underrated deterrent against burglars as it provides a well-lit property and surroundings, thus increasing visibility.  There are various types of security lighting for the home including flood lights and lighting for pathways and landscapes.

Landscape Lighting

Burglars are known for seeking more inconspicuous entry points. This is why maintaining the visibility of the entire property is beneficial.  Placing simple garden lights throughout the garden can offer the benefit of seeing the entirety of the property with one glance.  Landscape lighting is also perfect for illuminating dark corners.  This leaves even fewer places for intruders to hide.

The proper landscape lighting is integral in keeping the property safe but there are a few other basics to keep in mind.  It is advised to keep driveways and gardens clear of things the intruder can hide behind and where it is harder for light to reach.

Related to this, trimming the branches of any trees close to the house can hinder trespassers from using them to break into an upper-floor level. Motion sensors are recommended to provide even further security.

Motion Sensors

As we introduced above, motion sensors are useful for detecting both wanted and out-of-the-ordinary movement.  When a sensor detects motion, it sends a signal to your security system’s control panel.  This is connected to your monitoring center which alerts you to a potential threat in or around your home.  Many motion sensors also offer the advantage of illuminating the area(s) in question.

Motion Sensors with Lighting

While light is an important component for cameras to function, technology has greatly improved over the years.  Smart lighting technologies now enable our cameras to capture clear images even in the more difficult environments

For example, most cameras now have a filter that determines how much of the image is natural versus artificial light.  During the day, the filter is lifted to allow nice colorful images, and at night, it is removed to capture clear black-and-white images.

Infrared Illumination

Many of the cameras offered by Barnes Protection have infrared lights built into them. This allows the camera to also capture footage in the dark.  We recommend checking the range of the IR LEDs to determine the best location when mounting your camera(s).

More Than Burglary Prevention

When discussing home security, it’s natural to focus mainly on preventing robbery or monitoring for trespassing.  It’s important to remember that using motion sensors for home security also ensures the home is safe from other damages.  This includes incidents involving water, fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide.

Smart Home Automation

Together with the UltraSync platform by Interlogix, Barnes Protection offers the ability for users to control and monitor locks, thermostats, lights, video cameras, geofencing, and environmental sensors.

Installation can be done easily by the homeowners.  Once the hub is in place, the rest is done through the free UltraSync app downloaded to the user’s computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Once installed, homeowners can control lights remotely and have specific scenes trigger them.  Wave smart locks will also be fully controlled by the user.  The same applies to the home’s lights which can be set on a schedule or have specific events trigger them.  Click here for more information on smart home automation options.
