Shopping for home security systems can inspire many questions. For example, which is best for my home? Do I get it professionally installed or is a DIY installation possible? The list continues. One of the first questions that come to mind is usually, “How much will this cost?”. To answer this question, let’s look at the price of home security systems in 2024 and the factors that influence them.
Landline vs Broadband
As part of professional monitoring, you’ll need to keep a connection to the monitoring center. When choosing a home security system, one decision to make is whether keeping this connection will be made possible wirelessly or not.
Choosing one over the other is dependent on the home and the occupant’s needs as they both have pros and cons. For example, a wireless system may be the more logical option if you have children (especially those who are still crawling), pets, and/or plan to move eventually. In either case, as with most service providers, there is usually an option to lease or buy the necessary equipment.
Landline
As the name suggests, this system uses the home’s landline connection to notify the monitoring center of an alert. One of the selling points of this form of protection is that it’s usually the least expensive option. However, its biggest downfall is that if the line is cut, the connection to the monitoring center is also lost.
Broadband
Broadband connections are quite popular because if you have high-speed internet (as many people already do these days), you can use the same connection to communicate with the monitoring center.
As with the landline option, broadband setups also have a disadvantage; if the power goes out, so will the connection. Some providers provide backup batteries exactly for this reason. This way, the security system will still function even if the Wi-Fi has issues.
Cellular
Cellular monitoring uses a built-in chip that sends alerts to the monitoring center using the same signal your phone uses. This is an attractive method because it can’t be tampered with and as long as you already have good cellular service, the signal is not very likely to drop. Due to how convenient and reliable this is, a cellular connection is usually the most expensive option.
Surveillance and Monitoring Options
Typically, the services included in the monitoring option you select will affect the price of the service. Depending on the individual, installing an alarm may be sufficient. Others may wish to have all the bells and whistles (businesses, especially). This may include*:
- Alarm Installation
- Video Surveillance
- Smart Video Doorbells
- Access Control
- Personal Life Safety Devices
*Extra monitoring services are also available. They can include water/humidity sensors, low temperature and fire alarm monitoring. This does not increase the monthly rates.
